Our Story

Hailing from the vibrant city of Perth, the Symbios Quartet stands as a dynamic force in Western Australia's music scene. Established as one of the leading saxophone quartets in Perth, this ensemble transcends genre boundaries, seamlessly navigating through classical, jazz, fusion, funk, and contemporary musical landscapes.

Founded on the principles of symbiosis – a harmonious collaboration among its members – the quartet comprises accomplished musicians dedicated to pushing the boundaries of traditional saxophone quartet repertoire. Their innovative approach to music has garnered widespread acclaim, making them a trailblazer in the local and regional music scenes.

In 2022, Symbios Quartet showcased their prowess on the stage as semi-finalists in the prestigious Royal Overseas League Chamber (ROSL) competition. This marked a significant milestone in their journey, setting the stage for even greater achievements. Undeterred by the challenges, they returned in 2023 to triumphantly claim the top spot as the winners of the ROSL.

The quartet's collaborative spirit is evident in their extensive roster of partnerships with renowned musicians. Dr. Matt Styles, head of Saxophone and Honors at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), has played a pivotal role in shaping their artistic direction. Nikki Demandolx, a PhD student at WAAPA, has contributed her expertise to the quartet's evolving sound, adding depth and nuance to their performances.

Symbios Quartet's collaborations extend beyond the academic realm, with notable names such as Jenna Smith, the principal trumpet of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO), and Jon Parker (in image), a famous local percussionist and good friend. These partnerships have not only enriched the quartet's repertoire but also showcased their versatility in engaging with diverse musical traditions.

As the Symbios Quartet continues to captivate audiences with their innovative blend of genres and commitment to musical exploration, they remain a driving force in shaping the cultural landscape of Perth and beyond. With each performance, the quartet invites listeners on a transformative journey, demonstrating the power of symbiotic collaboration in the world of music.
